Prospective Graduate Students

Dr. Howell will be reviewing applications to accept a new PhD student for the 2025-2026 academic year

Graduate Student FAQs:

How do I know if I am a good fit for the REACH Lab?

When thinking about applying, it is important to consider how your interests, goals, and experiences fit with our lab’s research focus and the structure of the Clinical Science PhD program. You will be a good fit if you:

  • Are interested in a research career. Our Clinical Science PhD program focuses on developing research skills and the included coursework and expectations reflect this emphasis.
  • Are interested in research on the individual, relational, and contextual factors that enhance resilience or reduce risk for psychopathology in parents and children following exposure to traumatic events (e.g., intimate partner violence, death of a loved one).
  • Have prior research experience, which may include:
    • Conducting a senior thesis or other independent research project
    • Working in a research lab
    • Presenting at conferences or co-authoring papers
  • Have experience working with trauma-exposed individuals

Should I email you to express interest in applying to the REACH Lab? Will we be able to meet to discuss my interests?

It is my policy to not have video calls or meetings with prospective students prior to the application process. I also do not prioritize applications from prospective students who have contacted me prior to applying. This is for reasons of fairness – in particular to ensure that I am able to read every application that I receive with an open mind and from the same initial starting point. That said, if there are questions about my research or lab that you have that would be helpful to have answered as you prepare your application, I’m happy to answer them via email at khhowell@wisc.edu. If you have questions about completing/submitting the UW Madison Psychology Department application itself, the best person to contact is our graduate coordinator, kbelt@psych.wisc.edu.
